ST. PAISIOS MONASTERY - SOUROTI

Souroti a small town located just outside of Thessaloniki and a short transfer from Thessaloniki Airport.

The distance from Thessaloniki Airport to Souroti is 17 kilometers and by car the transfer takes approximately 20 minutes.

The distance from Thessaloniki city to Souroti is 27 kilometers and by car the transfer takes approximately 42 minutes.

The main reason why Souroti is very popular the last years is that the Holy Monastery of St. Paisios as it is called (St. John the Theologian) is situated there. The grave of St. Paisios of Mount Athos, the famous Orthodox ascetic of the 20th century, is located in the Convent. Thousands of pilgrims from Russia, Balkans and other parts of world are visiting the Monastery every year.

On the road just before Souroti there is the Agiasma (Holy Water) of St. Paraskevi. Most people who are visiting St. Paisios Monastery also make a stop at Ag. Paraskevi as well.

The village is also known for the mineral water bottled there. The Souroti carbonated natural mineral water, rich in calcium and magnesium, is known since antiquity for its unique beneficial properties. During First World War French troops that camped in Souroti (then called Surukli) mapped the spring and built a rudimentary bottling facility. In 1917 Serbian troops camped there and they in order to build a new bottling facility.
